Clear Your Clutter Day Campaign

The Clear Your Clutter Campaign is a year-round push to get us all to make money, save money and gain freedom by de-cluttering our lives on every level.

It has been set up by Jasmine Birtles, TV money guru and founder of MoneyMagpie.com. Jasmine says, “we lose millions every year by buying stuff we don’t need or not selling things we no longer want and then not using up what we already have because it’s hidden under piles of other junk! I believe households could be significantly richer if they de-junked their lives, cashed-in on what they have and lived simpler, more clutter-free lives going forward.”

The campaign reaches a peak each Spring with the National Clear Your Clutter Day, this year it will be Friday 24th May with activities around the country and online. However, things don’t just come to a close with the Clear Your Clutter Day, there are new ideas, videos and articles every week!

Keep your eyes peeled on the CYC section of our website where we’ll have lots of fun new articles and videos plus a week of competitions!

CYC day

National clear your clutter day

In the lead up to Clear Your Clutter Day 2018 we offered you, our readers, fantastic decluttering tips from articles and eBooks to videos to help you along your way. We also gave you access to industry experts who shared their tips on selling, swapping, donating, upcycling and recycling your items. On the day itself, Jasmine Birtles, dubbed the “Queen of Cash”, was joined by a team of experts and host a live Google Hangout, which you can still watch over on our YouTube page.

Clear Your Clutter Day is the perfect excuse to declutter your homes to reduce your bulging mountain of unwanted items, while helping you to live stress and clutter-free lives. But it’s only a small part of our year-round push to help you get organised!

Don’t forget to look out for our ongoing Clear Your Clutter competitions to win some fantastic prizes!

And see our MANY articles about Selling your stuff online and offline, How to recycle your gadgets for cash, How to make money selling your clothes on ASOS Marketplace, and lots more!

Jasmine’s Top Five Decluttering Tips:

1. Make a bid for freedom

Look on decluttering as gaining space and freedom rather than having to get rid of things. If you see it as gaining something, you’re much more likely to throw out unwanted items that you know you don’t love or need. Get 20 storage tips to save time and money here.

2. Do it space by space

Don’t try and do your whole home in one go. Do it drawer by drawer and cupboard by cupboard. Start with the easiest room in the house (probably the bathroom) and once you’ve cleared that room, give yourself a quick break and then start on the next easiest room. Once you’ve done two whole rooms you’ll already have more of a sense of satisfaction and control over your life which should spur you on to do more cluttered parts of the house.

3. Do it with a friend

Get a friend or family member to help you. It will make it more fun and help you sort more of your home then you would on your own. If you’re a natural hoarder, bring in someone who loves throwing things out, so that you’re not tempted to just keep everything. Get celebrity tips on how to declutter here.

4. Use the four box rule

Get four boxes which are marked ‘throw away’, ‘charity shop’, ‘sell’, ‘recycle’. Everything you decide not to keep should go into one of those boxes. The ‘throw away’ one is easy (although even some broken electronic items could be given away through Freecycle for parts). The ‘charity shop” one is obvious – take it to your nearest favourite charity shop, remembering to give them your name and postcode so that they can gift aid it. The stuff to recycle could be decorated, put in nice packaging and used as Christmas or birthday present, or, if its clothing you might be able to dye it, put new fastenings on it or add trimmings to give you a whole ‘new’ item you will actually wear. With the items to sell, you should photograph them and then just upload their details to an internet sales site such as eBay, Preloved or a local community Facebook group, while you’re watching TV in the evening. Sorted! Find out how you could actually LOSE WEIGHT by decluttering here.

5. Sort one item per day

If you can’t stand the idea of spending a day, or even half a day decluttering, just get into the habit of sorting one item per day. It’s not hard to do just one a day and, doing it this way, by the end of the year you will have sorted 265 items! It could be that once a day you put something online to sell or give away or you just drop something off to the charity shop on your way to work each day. Whatever works for you, get into the clearing habit and you will gain more freedom and make extra money throughout the year.
